Color Columbia Plein Air Event

Autumn Along Wilde Lake
Watercolor – 16 x 20

Columbia Art Center hosted the 2023 Color Columbia Plein Air event along Wilde Lake and Lake Kittamaqundi. While the sun came out more often than not, but it certainly was a blustery day! I definitely enjoyed the fall colors and having the time to be able to take on a larger piece. This piece was submitted to the juried exhibition and for sale.

Paint Annapolis 2023 – En Plein Air Event – Public Artist

Steeple View – from Dueling Brushes Opening day of Paint Annapolis invited artists to complete a piece in only 2 hours! Stamped with a blank canvas and framed artwork had to be raced to City Dock for showing and jurying.

Lafayette Park – from Public Artist Boundary Exploring the many docks and beautiful neighborhoods of Annapolis and finding plenty of vignettes for inspiration.

Treaty of Paris – from Public Artist Boundary A straight shot down Main street and the iconic historic Mary Land Inn where the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783. Met some wonderful people from this very busy tourist spot.

Evening on West Street – Nocturne Artists were encouraged to join the festivities on West Street and begin their piece at dusk. An extreme challenge to attempt in watercolor but 100% motivated to finish by two very supportive couples. Either they were stalking me, or I was stalking them. 😉

Let Me Give You a Hand

Hands

Those darn hands! They’re the first to disappear from muscle memory. Well, there’s only one way to bring them back – many, many, MANY hand doodles in my future.

Luckily for me, one of my kiddos swims which leaves me ample time to sit and doodle.

This very same notebook holds all my drawings, sketches, and doodles from 2020 leading into the subsequent lockdown. (The last page used is home to the Corn-teen image you see in a previous post.) Feels pretty good to dust it off and start filling it again. Let’s hope the hands get better at least!

And the Ink Goes On…

and off… and on again… and off again… and on, and on, and on…

Fresh pens, fresh paper, but still working through stale strokes. Hey, at least I keep making them – and – this in itself is progress! Excitedly, the feel of pencil on paper is quickly becoming familiar & comfortable again. The trickiest part right now is translating the penciled drawings into an ink cartoon. Deliver something less sketchy and much, much more clean and precise.

Minimization, maximization – it’s a push ‘n’ pull of which lines stay versus which ones go. “UGH” – another misplaced line! Do I start over? Can I blend it in? Should I Photoshop it?

Looking through past cartoons, it took almost 3 years to start finding that groove I liked. Let’s shoot for a quicker turn around this time, yes?!?
